LED Signs Approved Anywhere In Nanaimo

LED Sign On Port of Nanaimo Centre

After Two Years Of Study & Debate
LED Signs Finally Legal In Nanaimo

After two years of study, public consultation and much navel gazing, City Council has finally agreed to allow LED signage on businesses anywhere in Nanaimo. The size of the signs are limited to 10' x 10' and are limited in number.

The Chamber of Commerce in league with the business community has recommended that third party advertising not be allowed on the signs. In other words signs are only available to businesses operating in the city as a means of promoting their business. Otherwise, there would be the potential for a sea of LCD billboards selling space to other businesses etc.

These signs are not like the static neon signs you may be familiar with, as the message on these signs can be changed, can be animated, can scroll and can even include video. However at this time only static images are allowed but the images can be changed every few seconds.  One of the regulations governing these signs is that they must not be distracting to motorists (seems odd, I thought that was the idea of a sign), or nearby residents.

A spokeswoman for the Chamber of  Commerce said this latest move by council will send a strong, positive message to existing business and future investors in Nanaimo, that Nanaimo is progressive and supports business.

The committee to study the matter was established in 2008, and considering the speed with which council can make some decisions, this is not a shining example.

  1. This story is a wee bit premature. At its Oct. 4 meeting before final reading and after objections from the Province, a major developer and the city's own Design Advisory Panel, Council sent the proposed bylaw back to staff for further clarification. They did, however, pass a multiple variance to that bylaw, one of which was for an LED sign, if LED signs become legit.

  2. Yes, that is right, council did change their minds from what they seemed to support at the Sept. 14 meeting.
They seem to be unable to stick with any decision on this matter. Their own sign committee was opposed to these signs from the beginning, why they didn't simply adopt that recommendation is just another one of the things this council does that makes you wonder.

  3. I think they should review their mind and see where is the weakness of their decision regarding led sign proposal.
