Two Accidents On Nanaimo River Road - One Fatal

Truck Crash Into Second Lake Claims Life

At approximately 1:08pm on Sunday Sept 19 Nanaimo RCMP responded to a complaint of a vehicle over the embankment and in the water near Second Lake on Nanaimo River Road. Investigation revealed that the driver, operating a 1990 Blue Ford 4X4 pick up truck, had been heading toward Nanaimo on Nanaimo River Rd . He failed to navigate a curve and went off the road on the right hand side, striking the corner of a single lane bridge and went down the embankment. The vehicle was located at the bottom of the embankment, nearly 70ft down, and was half submerged in the water of Second Lake.  The truck had extensive body damage. The RCMP Dive team was summoned to the scene and shortly after located the body of the driver. The deceased is a 42 year old Nanaimo man, who had left his home earlier in the day to cut wood. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The Nanaimo RCMP is working in partnership with the Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstructionist Section (ICARS) and the BC Coroner’s Service in the investigation of this crash.

The deceased’s name is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

Dirt Bike Accident Later In Day

Then later in the day emergency services were again called to Nanaimo River Road. At approximately 4:41 pm a 28 yr old Nanaimo male had been dirt biking on the trails off of Nanaimo River Road, when he began braking and lost control and was flung over the handle bars. The bike landed on his right leg breaking it. He was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital by ambulance.
