Firecrackers Are Illegal In Nanaimo ?

Banned Firecrackers Easy To Find

The above ad was running on the local free classified site kijiji as well as several others. This one has a phone number contact while some others required an email response.

When I first spotted the ad I called the local RCMP and was told they were aware of the ad and had investigated but that it was not in Nanaimo.

I contacted one of the ads via email and after several email exchanges with vague references to where the fireworks could be purchased, I was told I could meet the seller in front of the theatres at Rutherford Mall. The seller told me where to meet and asked what I was driving, he never did offer any information as to how to identify him or where he was coming from.  However, this and other ads indicate the location as being off of Northfield Rd. in a residential area.

In any case I did not follow through with the purchase as I no longer get any joy making annoying noises, but was curious to see how available the illegal products were to anyone who wanted them. The email exchanges were very much the type of cloak and dagger back and forth you might expect if I were trying to score some drugs.

This whole incident makes me wonder if the fireworks ban in Nanaimo is really not working, as you don't have to drive far out of town to buy them legally. There must also be limited consequence to the sellers if they are advertising on the Internet, and finally the police did not seem to think it was really worth looking into when I called.

What do you think? Should fireworks be illegal in Nanaimo, or is it just a waste of police resources trying to enforce an unpopular law?

  1. Fireworks are Illegal !!! That should stop their sale, just like making pot and the selling of smokes and booze to kids is illegal.
I wonder if the police ever feel like they are just chasing their tails trying to enforce laws that really don't seem to be working?

  2. fire works are legal, and they do far more damage then little firecrackers i just got a big pack at the gas station the other day . so its absolutely absurd that fire crackers are illegal.
its kinda like crack or heroin being legalized, while marijuana still being illegal.
and you say that u no longer get joy out of annoying noises, which means you did before. So why go so much against something that you used to be a part of? amd why would you support such a ridiculous law.. it would make a whole lot more sense to do something like walk up and down the the streets with sighs tied to you that say something about fire works should be banned, ... but i wouldnt do that if i were you because the majority of the people that see you are just going to try to run you over wehen they go past, because most people woould agree with me that ur being rediculus, hypacritical,, and annoying

I was not saying I was in favour or opposed to the ban on firecracker sales.
I was making the point that banned or not, they are easily available just outside of town, and for that matter even being advertised in town.
So, is the ban really working or not?
