Saturday, October 16th 7:30 pm

“In a physical sense, Barton puts every muscle into play and her choreographyis exuberant, even when serious matters are being portrayed. Barton is sexy, cheeky and profound all at the same time.” ~ The Globe and Mail

An internationally renowned reportorial company, Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal has grown with all the energy and spirit of exploration for which it has been known since its inception in 1972.

Les Chambres des Jacques and Jack in a Box are two sensual and dramatic pieces that explore the inner and outer lives of dancers. Displaying a radiant and expressive style, BJM explores the creative side of contemporary trends, yet they are still firmly committed to classical aesthetics. Making a conscious effort to remain accessible, BJM brings to stage creations which speak to both neophytes and informed audiences.

Jack in a Box is the highly anticipated follow up to Les Chambres des Jacques, a performance piece that examined the inner life of a dancer. This new creation is a continuation that examines the growth, power and etiquette of the dancers as a unit. It is choreographedby Aszure Barton, she had this to say about the piece: “The starting point of Jacques was an exploration of the inner life and drama of the individual dancers. Jack, on the contrary, studies the body’s outer edges. Through structure and form, Jack examines the growth, etiquette and power of the group as a collective whole.”

Aszure Barton was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and received her formal dance training at the National Ballet School in Toronto. She has choreographed new works for many prestigious individuals and companies worldwide including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Fang-Yi Sheu, The National Balletof Canada, American Ballet Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, The Juilliard School, The Martha Graham Dance Company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, among others.
Co-produced with the Canada Dance Festival, the National Arts Centre, and The Banff Centre.
