On Saturday, Oct. 30 from noon until 3 pm, more than 80 stores and shops along Commercial Street, the Old City Quarter, the Waterfront and Victoria Crescent will host a pageant of costumed kids as they seek out the ultimate Halloween bounty, namely lip-smacking treats.

“In my experience, the vast majority of downtown merchants really get into the spirit of Halloween and we definitely enjoy all the kids in costumes,” says Eileen Harakas, owner of Lobelia’s Lair in the Heritage Mews. “We’re a creative bunch downtown, and Halloween seems to be a genuine crowd favourite here.”

Besides getting jolted with sugar rushes, trick or treaters can also have some fun with Halloween crafts, generously provided by Kool and Child, at Bocca on Fitzwilliam Street from noon until 3 pm. The Harbourfront Library is also getting into the spooky season by sharing some scary stories from 2:00-2:30 pm.

For those who are planning to come downtown on Oct. 30, the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association (DNBIA) will be putting out orange and black balloons in front of the participating stores, shops and services so everyone will know who’s got the Halloween loot.

There will also be maps and a list of all the participating merchants available at Nanaimo Museum, Harbourfront Library, Bocca, Lobelia’s Lair and Kool and Child.

“We’re all very excited to see what the kids come up with for costumes this year,” says Haraks. “It is definitely a treat for all of us.”
