Sword - Stealing Vandal Still Not Caught

RCMP Want Your Help
Solving This Crime
Nanaimo RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the persons responsible for vandalizing the statue of former Mayor Frank Ney located in Maffeo Sutton park. The damage occurred on either Saturday October 23 or Sunday October 24th and consisted of vandals breaking the sword off the statue.

Frank Ney was a well respected and colorful Mayor of Nanaimo from 1967-1984 and then again from 1986-1990. He was known for his outgoing personality and his habit of attending civic events dressed as a pirate. His energy was instrumental in bringing the world famous bathtub races to Nanaimo. In fact, his statue, constructed entirely by public donations and built by local artist Jack Harman, was unveiled during the running of Bathtub weekend in 1994. The bronze statue has a base made of stone which was brought in by barge from Newscastle Island. The statue has been an important tourist attraction in the Nanaimo area ever since.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.nanaimocrimestoppers.ca

Comment: Me missus and I were down that way the other day, which is when I took this photo. From a certain angle, without the sword, it almost looks as if Frank is giving the crook the finger. LOL
