When You Think Firemen
This Is Likely What You Think
Maintaining their equipment and keeping the bright red firetruck all nice and shiny, sitting around the firehouse playing cards and eating chili, and every so often having to slide down the pole and leap into action; is a stereotype that does not apply to the modern day fire department in Nanaimo.
I was surprised to learn that of the 5800+ calls the department has received this year 61% were in response to a medical emergency, 10% involved motor vehicles and 9.5% were responding to fire alarms (few of which were because of an actual fire).
