Pipe Bomb Explodes Near House

A central Nanaimo family was awoken shortly after 1:00 AM Saturday morning to a pipe bomb exploding behind their house that was strong enough to knock out a rear window, tear off siding and gouge a nearby tree.

Police were quickly on scene and noted a hole in the ground beside the house, holes in the siding and a shattered window pane. A tree that was approximately five feet away also experienced significant blast damage.

RCMP forensic experts were on scene later that morning and seized several fragments and remaining pieces to the bomb. A 23 year old male who resides in the home told police at approximately 1:00 AM he heard a noise that sounded like air being let out of the tires to their vehicle in the driveway. A few minutes later he heard the explosion to the rear of their home then called police. Officers conducted patrols of the area and spoke to several neighbors but could not find anyone who saw anything suspicious prior to the incident. Officers also noted two tires on the home owners vehicle had been slashed.

“This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have had devastating consequences. Fortunately no one was injured and currently investigators have not established a motive behind this act .”said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS) or go on line at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.ca
