Thousands of Dead Herring North of Boat Harbour
The local daily press is reporting a disturbing incident in the Boat Harbour area of Cedar. Apparently large numbers of dead herring have washed ashore on North Beach without any apparent explanation.
DFO has sent officers to the area to investigate but so far have not released any findings. Speculation for the unusual event range from fish swimming into a low oxygen area close to shore, a net breaking being used by some commercial fishermen engaged in a small herring fishery presently underway, possible discharge from Harmac to a connection with the recent freighter in Ladysmith harbour being cleaned up due to a uranium spill in the ships cargo hold.
