BC Ferry Passenger Arrested By RCMP

Man Arrested With Heroine and Cocaine

A passenger walking off a BC Ferry arriving in Nanaimo on Saturday night was arrested with a large quantity of cocaine and heroin.

Members of the Nanaimo RCMP Municipal Drug Unit arrested a 31 year old male as he walked off a BC Ferry which landed at the Departure Bay ferry terminal on Saturday at approximately 8:30 PM. A search of the male’s effects located one kilogram of heroin and ½ kilogram of cocaine.

The male was transported to the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment where he was later released on a Promise to Appear. “Investigators are recommending charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act and a Criminal Code charge of Obstruction,” said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.

The obstruction charge stems from the male providing a false name to officers upon his arrest. His first court appearance is set for April 12.

“This individual has been on our radar for some time and his arrest is the culmination of weeks of work by our drug members. Taking these drugs off the streets of Nanaimo is significant and will definitely have an impact at least in the short term on the drug scene in and around Nanaimo,” said O’Brien.
