Nanaimo Info: www.nanaimo-info-blog.com
While this blog by K.J. (Jim) Taylor is minimalist in its appearance, it makes up for it by providing detailed and informative blog posts. Sparingly flanked with photographs, each piece is well constructed and thoughtful. Every few days, a post is just something to make you smile, such as an amusing photo or caption, but the focus of this blog is really a collection of well researched pieces that are informative and to the point. Taylor touches on community events and culture, but he is clearly a blogger of a more serious mind, and condenses issues like the economy, civil politics, and environmental issues into digestible daily doses. Oh, if only more bloggers followed this format!
In one sitting, I got a brief lesson on the current state of the Canadian economy, toured the Vancouver Island Fibre Arts Showcase, and a point of view on the building of a cruise ship terminal in Nanaimo. This blogger may not boast himself as a ‘one stop shop’ for Nanaimo news, but I believe that I can safely do so.
Taylor is also something of a historian. This blog is part of his overarching website Nanaimo Info (www.nanaimo-info.com) that contains a generous helping of information about Nanaimo, including historical photographs of the city, several directories of hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Although this was not the most visually striking of the blogs I researched, it was one that I took seriously and I really felt the writer’s energy for their topic and their community.
