Endorsement Sent To 13,000 Members
The local Daily is reporting that by-election candidate Darcy Olsen has been given the nod by the Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council. This means her name will be sent as being endorsed by the council to it's 13,000 members, many of whom will be voting in the upcoming by-election.
The article makes no mention as to why the Council feels any particular candidate is deserving of their support. I presume it would be because they are seen as friendly to labour. Local candidates Greves and Fuller were also bidding for the Council's support.
The deadline for nominations is today at 4:00pm, so if you make a last minute decision to throw your hat in the ring, you are just about out of time, but still could manage if you hurry.
By-elections usually get less attention from the voters than a regular election, where recent voter turnout has been pretty dismal. It remains to be seen if there is enough voter interest to make the upcoming by-election a real horse race or not.
UPDATE
Mr. Fuller has announced he is withdrawing from the by-election and throwing his support behind Olsen.
Comment: This is a good time to find out what candidates actually think, as once elected for the most part on important issues the current Mayor seems to be the only one who can express an opinion. That of course is only on decisions that aren't made 'in secret' behind closed doors, so we don't even know how they made their decisions. Transparency? Should be an issue in the fall election.
