Nanaimo News Notes April 13, 2011

NDTA: the Nanaimo District Teachers Association is calling for the local school board to submit a deficit budget rather than by making cuts to programs to balance the figures.
Jeff Parks: a culinary arts student at VIU is off to Montreal where his recipe for Pear Mousse Strata (a pear dessert using anjou pears, lychee sorbet, mascarpone cheese, phyllo pasty and mulled red wine) will be competing with chefs from the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario and the Prairie provinces. The United States Pear Bureau nominated his dessert the the Canadian Award. Bravo, Jeff.
Labour Unrest: 200 social service workers in Nanaimo will be taking a strike vote after their union  talks broke down with the Province. There are 140 CUPE workers at the Nanaimo Association for Community Living which could cause disruption of service as a result.
Bus Service: is back to normal on the buses running to and from Vancouver Island University. The buses routes had been changed during the recent VIUFA strike.
Cell Tower: Telus plans to build a 60 meter tower to support their wireless communications network. It would be located at 1710 Woobank Road and the project has not met with the resistance the company encountered when trying to improve service in the Hammond Bay Rd. area.
E & N Rail: the Island Corridor Foundations and Island Communities which own the rail line, are seeking an audience with the Premier and Transportation Minister in an attempt to secure $15 million in funding, the ICF claims is needed to replace rail ties and bring the line up to a safe standard.
Crowder: local NDP MP claimed $334.88 as an election expense, which was the cost of clothing and shoes, she says were needed for the campaign. ??
Silly Boats: It's time to start planning for your seaworthy entry into this years Silly Boat Regatta, which will take place on July 17 with a start time of 8:00 am. This is the 27th annual fun race which has become a highlight of the summer season in Nanaimo.
Roller Derby: April 23 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre will be the venue for the opening event of the season's Nanaimo Roller Derby with Nanaimo Nemesis Roller Girls picking a fight with Harbour City Rollers. More information is at www.islandderby.com.
Lawn Bowling: Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club will host an open house this Saturday at Bowen Park from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.This is an enjoyable competitive  sport where you can enjoy a social atmosphere in the great outdoors. More information from www.NanaimoLawnBowling.com.
Local Small Business: 15 small local businesses selling a wide variety of products such as toys, clothing for all ages, photography, jewellry and assorted baby products will be at the Treasure Chest business fair this Sunday starting at 10:00am. The fair takes place at the Nanaimo Rugby Club at 6700 Dover Road. Come out and support these small local businesses.
