Nanaimo News Notes April 15, 2011

Anjelica Lum: of Nanaimo competed in the BC Gymnastics Championships in Langely against nearly 800 competitors on trampoline and artistic gymnastics and placed 4th in bars, 2nd on beam, 2nd on floor and landed a 1st overall with a score of 48.250 in Level 2 competition. This makes her one of BC's top gymnasts. Kudos, Anjelica!
Cruise Ship Terminal: it's a last minute scramble to finish on time, but the cruise ship terminal is scheduled for it's official opening on May 6, with the first cruise ship coming in the very next day.
Hammond Bay Sidewalks: the areas around McGirr Elementary will be getting the attention of the city with the plan to construct sidewalks and proper crosswalks to help ensure the safety of area students.
Western Edge: Theatre group is presenting 'Moonbound', a new musical based on an H G Wells novel in a once - only concert on April 20. The performance will be at the Diner's Rendezvous at 7:30pm at 489 Wallace Street. For reservations call 250-668-0991. The performance is a fundraiser for Western Edge Theatre and the cost of $20 includes a $15 tax receipt and free appetizers. Regular dinner service is available.
Spring Concert: the Nanaimo Concert Band is holding their annual spring concert this weekend in the Port Theatre on Sunday at 2:30pm. Tickets are only $15 and available online at www.porttheatre.com or calling 250-754-8550.
Beer Festival: April 15 from 6:30 - 9:30pm, Beban Park is the place for the 15th Annual Nanaimo Beer Festival. Various breweries will be present with sampling of different brews being available. Tickets are $35, more information available at 250-758-1131.
HST: upcoming referendum is putting a crimp in new home sales, as people wait to see the results of the vote.
McDonalds Hiring Blitz: the famous Golden Arches are having their first National Hiring Day on April 19 to help the company fill some 4,000 full and part time positions. Nanaimo restaurants are participating in the Hiring Day using it as a chance to publicize a well kept secret, that McDonald's can be the start of a challenging and rewarding career.
