Same Actors - - - - - - Different Play

Federal Election 2011 - - - The Big Yawn
Coming To A Town Near You

I posted this tongue in cheek ad here last summer, and while it is dated it pretty much sums up the state of the Canadian political scene. The only difference now is that the House of Commons Theatre Troupe have taken their show on the road.

Anybody willing to bet if the scene in Ottawa will change after the federal election? I for one don't see how it will, as it will be the same bunch, more or less, playing their parts of those pretending to be in power and those who pretend to be in opposition continuing to put on their little drama, which the melba toast mainstream media seems to continue to lap up.

I don't think all this new 'instant' media with Facebook and Tweeter forever clamoring for the next great piece of news to fall from the politicians lips does anyone any favours. This idea that we have to be entertained by the 15 second sound bite every hour or so does nothing to improve the quality of governance we can expect from Ottawa.

If the press only reported what was newsworthy coming from these guys we might hear something once a week or less often for that matter. Instead now, news 'shows' have got 22 minutes of airtime to fill every half hour and they simply need to fill that space, and quantity has long since replaced quality. Facebook and Tweeter are simply the next logical extension for a generation obsessed with instant this and instant that which is producing an era of 'news' which seems more suited to those afflicted with attention deficit disorder.

Wake me up on May 3 and let me know how it turned out, and if anything has substantially changed. Personally, I think the opposition players had pretty well run out of material to use in the House of Commons so got together and decided to take their show on the road to see if they could perhaps get some new material. For example, with the Liberals it seems they never had any solid alternatives when they occupied Ottawa and are letting the public form their platform as they are going. They just keep throwing ideas out their and jump on board the ones which seem to have some traction - - - -  not really what you would call LEADERSHIP.

The Conservatives are no better, they brought in a budget a few weeks back, and now are proclaiming they found another $11 billion or so. And the NDP, well they just keep making promises, secure in the knowledge they will never actually have to deliver on them so they are comfortable in making whatever lavish promises they think will appeal to their base.

Here's a free bit of advice for the boys and girls in Ottawa of ALL political stripes on how they could save the Canadian taxpayer some $300 million - - - - -  just grow up and realize you are supposed to be SERVING the public for the good of all, rather than carrying on like a bunch of kids in kindergarten. My apologizes if I have offended anyone in kindergarten, for you DO demonstrate a greater level of maturity than these guys during Question Period.

OK, at least I feel better now - - -  rant over!  :^)
