Nanaimo Construction Activity

Home of New 7/11 On Nicol Street
 Port Place Mall Reno Continues
New Building on Port Place Site
While Nanaimo is hardly in the midst of a construction boom, there is clearly lots of activity in the downtown area. Not the least of which is the new $24 million cruise ship terminal which will receive our first guests tomorrow.

The top photo shows the framing stage of construction of the new home of the 7/11 on Nicol Street across from the Nicol St. McDonalds on the corner which has sat vacant for sometime now after the demolition of the old building which housed the previous 7/11. This project met with some opposition of area residents as they felt the 24 hour a day operation would once more attract some of the undesirable elements in society back to this corner.

The middle photo is the outside of Port Place mall which houses the existing London Drugs store, which will be staying in it's current location once renovations are complete. The bottom photo shows the iron 'skeleton' of the new building occupying the corner of the lot immediately across from the Salvation Army New Hope Centre.

So, while trades people will not be coming to Nanaimo from other parts of Canada at least some construction workers are finding employment in Nanaimo.
