More City of Nanaimo Wasteful Spending?

Why Advertise In The Daily News?

As long time city hall watchdog Fred Taylor has pointed out on many occasions it would seem the city of Nanaimo is wasting several thousand tax dollars monthly advertising in the local daily. Last time I checked the Daily News gets in excess of 100,000 tax dollars every year from the city.

While using local media to inform Nanaimo residents of important civic matters is important you have to question the need for duplication when it comes to using the local newspapers.

The Nanaimo Daily News has only a few thousand paid subscribers anymore (a sad commentary on the overall state of newspapers) while the Nanaimo News Bulletin delivers their newspaper to every household in Nanaimo three times each week.

It would seem only logical that the advertisement in the Nanaimo News Bulletin is going to put the needed information into the hands of all Nanaimo residents and the tax dollars paid to the Daily News could be better used elsewhere.

You don't see the advertisers who use the News Bulletin to deliver their sales flyers using the Daily News as well, so clearly the effectiveness of just using the Bulletin is beyond dispute. But then again, businesses have to be accountable for how they spend their money, and we all suspect those same rules just don't apply at city hall.
