Cougar Stalks Woman On E. Wellington Rd.

According to an article in the Times Colonist a woman had an encounter with a cougar on Monday night in the area of Mountainview Elementary School on E. Wellington Road.

A woman in Nanaimo was stalked by a cougar on Monday night.

Nanaimo RCMP said a woman was cycling about 7:20 p.m. on East Wellington Road, near Mountainview Elementary School, when she saw a cougar in a crouch and circling her. She got off her bike and confronted the animal, scaring it away.

A search conducted by police and a conservation officer turned up nothing. Officials said the woman did the right thing by facing the cougar.

“Never turn and run when a cougar is coming at you low to the ground, as the cougar may strike,” conservation officer Steve Ackles said in a statement.

The same area of Nanaimo has been the site of past cougar sightings, but this is the first one on record for 2011.
