Ignition Lockout Devices In Work Vehicles

Convicted Drunk Drivers Need
Lockout Devices In Work Vehicles

It is being reported in the Times Colonist today that the new BC Drunk driving laws requiring offenders to install and maintain an ignition lockout device in all vehicles they drive is causing some unexpected headaches for employers.

In one case on the Island an assistant fire chief requires the device on any vehicle he will drive, and that includes fire department vehicles. Of course the dilemma faced by employers is to install the devices which cost about $1700 or let the employee go. They don't seem to be considering having the employee pay the cost.

Given the recent history with a fuel tanker truck on the Malahat, having such devices installed on any vehicle hauling dangerous cargo might be a consideration.
