Nanaimo Firefighters Care to Wear Pink
During the Month of October
"Real men wear pink" couldn't be more true during the month of
October. The campaign, referred to as "Fire Fighters supporting those we
love," has Nanaimo Fire Rescue personnel wearing pink T-shirts during
the month of October in recognition of Breast Cancer in addition to
raising awareness about other forms of cancers often seen within the
industry itself.
In fact, Firefighters across Canada and the USA will be donning pink
t-shirts to support the cause as part of their efforts to raise funds to
find a cure. Among Canadian women, breast cancer continues to be the
most frequently diagnosed cancer with as many as 23,200 new cases
diagnosed in 2010. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer
mortality among women, and is expected to take the lives of 5,400
Canadian women in 2010.
Organizer Peter Hyne, Lieutenant with Nanaimo Fire Rescue has
coordinated the event raising around $1300 towards the cause. All
proceeds will be going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
According to Hyne, "We feel it is important to support this cause.
Many of us have experienced cancer with our spouses, sisters daughters
and other family members We hope that by wearing these t-shirts it will
further increase the awareness in the community and that this display of
support by wearing the t-shirts will encourage or inspire those
battling breast cancer or any other forms of cancer."
