$200 Fine And Seizure Of Fireworks
Nanaimo RCMP wishes to advise the public that regardless of age, it
is illegal to possess, sell or discharge fireworks within the City of
Nanaimo.
Bylaw 7049 which deals with fireworks in the City of
Nanaimo and in effect since September 2007, has assisted police, bylaw
officers and City of Nanaimo Fire and Rescue crews with maintaining
order and reducing calls for service. Those calls primarily consisted of
individuals who accidentally injured themselves or others while setting
off fireworks and small fires starting from fireworks going astray and
igniting nearby bushes or trees.
“The public needs to understand
that if you are found to be in possession of fireworks, you can be fined
$200 and have the fireworks seized. Also, Halloween is traditionally a
very busy time for our members. With lots of kids and parents alike
walking our City streets, we will be doing our part to ensure the
evening remains fun and accidents and foolishness are kept to a minimum
by having extra officers and patrols on all night,” said Constable Gary
O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.
Permits can be obtained to lawfully set off fireworks but can only be issued by the City of Nanaimo Fire Chief.
Before
applications are considered, the applicant must show proof they possess
$2 million dollars in liability insurance and have a fireworks
supervisor’s certificate. For all of the necessary requirements, please

Yes - I asked those kids this past weekend if they held a fireworks supervisor certificate and had liability insurance. No prob.

Reasonably, I'm fine with people setting off fireworks from their own property or in the safety of a school park within reasonable hours. I just don't ever see any enforcement - ever. Includes patrol cars driving thru the neighbourhoods....
This is a stupid loophole in the laws. Illegal to set off fireworks, but not illegal to purchase them or possess them? What else do people do with them? Put them up on the mantle?
ReplyDeleteWhy not do like fishing and sell licenses to purchase fireworks? And create reasonable guidelines so that people can have fun while not negatively affecting others?
