Incumbent Mayor John Ruttan Only Declared
A One Horse Race For Mayor So Far
While nominations are not officially closed until Friday afternoon, and there is still lots of time for candidates to declare, the only person running for Mayor is John Ruttan.
You have to wonder if other candidates are really hesitant to join in the race or if there is some perceived tactical advantage to not declaring until the last minute.
So far sitting Councillors who have not declared include Bill Bestwick, Diana Johnstone, Loyd Sherry, Bill Holdom and Merv Unger.
Sitting on city council for this next term is undoubtedly not for the faint of heart with huge fiscal issues on the horizon and the need for some sound financial management if the city of Nanaimo is going to avoid some serious issues. This sound management will have to come from the next council as current senior staff have shown some serious shortcomings of late.
