Occupy Until January 31, 2012??
When I looked at the Occupy Nanaimo website yesterday it indicated there were no further events planned as I reported in an article about the occupy group yesterday.
When I checked their site today, it is interesting to note that they now indicate the occupation will be from Saturday, October 15 at 11:00 am - Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 5:00 PM.
I have not been able to contact organizer Matthew Orrick to confirm I am understanding the groups intentions, but if the end of January, 2012 is their 'exit date' it will be interesting to see if the group and neighbours, and the city can all get along until then.
Some I am sure think the group is becoming a nuisance and should just move along, but people who intend to end corporate greed and shift all of society to their point of view will likely be a great nuisance before their end is achieved.

ReplyDeleteIt's a plus that the "occupation" has been peaceful! However, it appears to be greatly lacking in leadership. I certainly support peaceful demonstration; however, the Plaza is a City Facility, which is financially supported by ALL Nanaimo taxpayers and their interests regarding the potential for legal liability have to be protected.
From personal experience, (2009 public rally on HST tax policy matter at Maffeo-Sutton Park), I am aware that if I want to use space in a City Facility for a public event, I would be required to enter into a written Agreement with the City of Nanaimo, Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture -- Rental Contract / Permit Facility Lic. Agreement -- wherein the City grants permission to the Licensee to use the Facility, subject to the terms and conditions of the Agreement.
The START and END DATES and TIMES of the event are set out in the Agreement and a damage deposit is usually required.

ReplyDeleteThanks for that. I don't know however if Occupy Nanaimo actually went through the 'rental' agreement process, but rather simply showed up!
To that end I doubt if any group is actually responsible for anything other than occupying public space.
Could get interesting.
The legal issues surrounding assembly for political purpose is a bit sticky as it seems some lawyers in Vancouver are claiming.
