New North End Dog Park Planned

New Off Leash Dog Park Planned

At yesterdays Finance Policy Committee of the Whole (FPCOW) meeting, city council received a report which outlines an agreement between the city of Nanaimo and the School District for the use of land adjacent May Richards Bennett Park on Dickinson Road.

Sometime in the spring of next year, Rovers living in the north end will have a place to shed the shackles of their leash and roam free in the wooded park area. Like other off leash dog parks, it will be monitored closely by the city to see that conflicts are avoided between dog owners and other users of the park.

This is a well wooded area, and it was unclear to me how owners would be able to keep control of Rover, should he engage primal instincts when he sees a fluffy little rabbit hopping through the woodland glen. This is not the least like the area at Beban Park being used as an off leash dog park, which has seen some conflict this past year.

The address of the land involved is 6700 Dickinson Road, Nanaimo, B.C. and is owned by School District #68.
