Duke Point Ferry Crash

Dock Out Of Service For Months!

Apparently the 'hard landing' which is spin-speak for CRASHED INTO DOCK has resulted in the ferry being out of service for at least a month and the dock out of service for even longer.

The initial reports are blaming an electronics failure which caused the Coastal Inspiration to crash into the dock with enough force to cause considerable damage to not only the vessel by the loading ramp as well.

It is reported that a large steel hinge which was damaged will have to be ordered and manufactured in Europe, then shipped over here and installed before the vessel is in service again.

Comment: After crashing into the dock at Duke Point and causing such damage, I wonder why they were so confident that when they moved the ferry to the terminal in Departure Bay they wouldn't also crash into it?

Second thought, we are supposed to be in the running for a huge ship building contract coming out of Ottawa, yet we have to have the Europeans machine a 'large steel hinge'. Does anyone else have a problem with that??

Final thought, this really puts a sharp point on how dependent we are on the ferry to the mainland, and I shudder to think what kind of an impact a similar accident would have at Departure Bay terminal.
