Saskatchewan Jobs Go Begging

Jobs Website Lists 9500 Job Openings

While much of the world struggles with it's economy and Nanaimo is no exception, the province of Saskatchewan has an enviable 'problem'. According to an article in the Financial Post, Premier Brad Wall is faced with the task of luring people to his province to support the booming economy.

The story goes on to say that the Premier of Sask. will be focusing on attracting skilled workers from other parts of the globe so as not to compete with Alberta, whose economy is also exploding. Alberta posted a Nov. jobless rate of 5% and Sask. had a rate of 5.1% up from the 3.7% rate posted in October.

Now, before we start yelling about how we need to create jobs here in Nanaimo to solve our employment problems, the reality is that most of the good paying, family supporting jobs in Canada have always been based in the resource sector. There are of course tech sector and manufacturing sector jobs, but the real backbone that built Canada is resources. In that regard Nanaimo has been struggling since the shine went off the fishing and foresty industries.

So, as much as you can't argue that Nanaimo offers a much more desireable climate than Saskatoon, if the choice is to line up in the rain for a bag of food at the local food bank, or support a family with a good paying job, while enduring a colder winter, it seems a no-brainer to me.
