Harmac To Produce Electricity

$45 Million Generation Plant Announced

The local daily reports that Nanaimo Forest Products has inked a deal with BC Hydro to supply 25 megawatts of green electricity, the equivalent to supply 17,000 homes for a year.

What is not made clear in the report is how burning wood waste (hog fuel) is considered to be a source of green energy. I believe sometime ago a gas burning, electric generation project planned for Duke Point was scuttled over environmental concerns.

The project to build the plant is reported to be worth $45 million and will provide 85 full time construction jobs for 18 months during the building phase. Apparently the project is being totally privately funded and whether or not any of the $27 million Harmac received in government grants will help fund this project is not clear.

Given that the source for fuel to run this electric generation plant is wood waste, it would seem the future of the generation station is directly tied to an active forest industry constantly producing waste?

It is also reported Mr. Sampson says the construction of the plant will begin "immediately"; which seems a little amazing considering how long it usually takes to get approval to build a storage shed on your property if you are a private citizen. How in the world Harmac has all the approvals in place to satisfy the environmental interests and be in the position to start immediately is perhaps the most interesting detail of this whole story.

To be continued .........
