More Problems Plague Ferries

It is reported that the Queen of Oak Bay may have suffered a seized engine last night while heading to Horseshoe Bay from Nanaimo. Apparently smoke was visible, but there never was an actual fire, when the engine seized. This also resulted in another rough docking which is not as easy with only one engine.

The 'hard landing' which has taken the terminal at Duke Point out of service is thought to be the result of a faulty propeller and the failure to use three available backup systems that should have avoided the crash.

 The Duke Point 'Crash"

"What we've got here is a failure, an unexpected failure, of, I'll admit, a critical system, the manoeuvring control system for the propeller, and it failed," said Mark Collins, vice-president of engineering for BC Ferries, during an interview Thursday afternoon. "There are three backup systems in place and those backup systems were available but not used."
"Our question is about why all of the safety and redundancy systems weren't used in the manner that could prevent this. And so that's where we are going in general terms."
