Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation

“Nanaimo Business Counts” Program
January 24th Forum For Construction Sector
The retention and expansion of local businesses that have made Nanaimo their home is a fundamental strategy for the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation (NEDC). While some economic development efforts focus primarily on attracting new businesses, this program is designed to support the existing business base. Research across North America indicates that 60%-80% of new job creation is generated by existing businesses.

The Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation’s (NEDC) business retention and expansion program, Nanaimo Business Counts, is focused on creating a process in the community to support these businesses by building an ongoing dialogue and providing assistance in resolving issues, removing obstacles and expediting growth. To accomplish this NEDC will be launching facilitated monthly business sector forums. Each forum will be a fast paced session designed to garner feedback and solicit concrete recommendations from business owners and industry leaders.

“The NEDC is interested in hearing what our businesses need from us, so we can develop our workplan to impact their real concerns and make a difference” says AJ Hustins, Co-chair of NEDC.

Co-chair of NEDC, Moira Jenkins, shares that “participants will also discuss opportunities as much as the roadblocks they face. Exciting collaboration could come from these forums, when we share information on the existing strengths of our community.”

Information collected and resulting actions will be communicated on an ongoing basis via press releases, the NEDC newsletter and website. At the end of the year, the NEDC will host a special forum to present the findings of the sessions and the plan moving forward.

The first forum, scheduled for January 24, will focus on the construction sector. Invitation lists will include a cross-section of the industry. Businesses who do not receive an invitation but still wish to participate are asked to contact the NEDC at 250-591-1551 or katie.ferland@investnanaimo.com.
