FREE Valentine's Dinner Nanaimo

NWGH PUTS ON FREE VALENTINES DINNER

Nanaimo’s Working Group on Homelessness will be hosting a Valentines dinner at St Pauls Anglican Church hall, 100 Chapel street.  The event is being sponsored by NWGH, the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society and the City of Nanaimo.

The Valentines dinner will be held on February 14th, 2012, from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. The meal will be prepared by volunteers and there will be no charge for the meal.  France Tellier, Executive Director of John Howard Society, comments; “the traditional symbol of Valentines is the heart, and what better way to show that the community has heart than to provide a hot meal to those who may lack the means to cook for themselves.”

With help from volunteers and donations from the community the cost of providing a sit down dinner to as many as 200 people is being significantly reduced.  What costs do remain will be covered by funding from VIHA received by the City of Nanaimo to address homelessness in the community.  “When someone has no place to live they also have no place to cook and prepare food” says John Horn, Social Planner with the City, “this event provides a chance for individuals to share a good home cooked meal with others in the same situation.”

 Want To Help?
Nanaimo’s Working Group on Homelessness agrees; “food and shelter are the basics of life” says NWGH chair John Neville, but in providing that we also hope to enrich people’s sense of being a valued part of the community. As such we welcome the support or participation of Nanaimo residents, who can help by donating money or food, or by helping with setup, serving or cleanup.”  Interested parties can contact Cheryl Dodge, Nanaimo Region John Howard Society, 200-1585 Bowen road, Nanaimo.  250-754-1266
