Nanaimo Downtown Parking Issues

Is Parking Enforcement Good or Bad For Business?

The question of downtown parking has been an issue for as long as I can remember. The basic two sides of the coin are that risking a ticket discourages people from coming downtown, while not enforcing parking limits means people will park all day, resulting in no turnover of the limited on-street parking spots. This turnover is crucial for the success of merchants, who are always faced with competition from the malls, where of course parking is not an issue.

If people don't mind stretching their legs and actually WALKING a bit, there is more than ample parking available in the many lots scattered around downtown. Of course they are also not free, and you still risk a ticket if you overstay the amount of time you have paid for, which of course is part of the problem with not being able to pay when you leave, rather than guess how long you will be when you buy your ticket.

It will take Solomon to sort this one out, as it has been kicked around for a long, long time.
