Segways In Nanaimo Parks?

Segway Victoria is trying to drum up support to bring their business to Nanaimo.

They hope to get the city's approval to provide guided tours of some of Nanaimo's parks and perhaps along the waterfront. What they are proposing is guided tours, with up to eight people riding the two wheeled electric vehicles, being led through some of Nanaimo's parks and trails.

Apparently getting approval for these two wheeled wonders presents all sorts of challenges which is why they don't seem to have ever caught on in this part of the world.

What do you think? Good Idea or Not So Much??

  1. Silent, motorized vehicles being driven by inexperienced riders just sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
What is the liability to the city, should one of these people loose control and hit a 'happy wanderer' just out enjoying the peace and solitude of the park.
They might be OK in wide open spaces like Maffeo Sutton's parking lot, but on a wooded trail???
    'Not so Much!'

Hello Happy Wanderer and thank you for your concerns,

I am the tours manager for Ride the Glide (the segway tour company operating tours in Nanaimo) and as I have ridden a Segway numerous times over many different types of terrain I can assure you that they are safe and easy to use with as little as 10 minuites of training. Also the tour guildes are very capable of training our clients and ensuring no problems between trail usrers and gliders occur. I invite you to contact us at any time if you have any more concerns about the use of Segways on Nanaimos trails, and I hope one day you will try a segway for yourself and see just how easy it can be.
