Nanaimo Slips On Money Sense Survey

Best Places To Live List
Nanaimo Ranks 74 / 190 Canadian Cities

Nanaimo still has a respectable ranking on the Money Sense 'Best Places To Live In Canada 2012 List' in spite of slipping from #36 in 2011 to #74 in 2012.  Of note is the fact our neighbours to the south had a considerably better showing with Saanich ranking #15 out of 190 and Victoria coming in at #35, we were even slightly beaten by Courtenay with a ranking of 73 out of 190.

Money Sense has a very complicated methodology to determine the ranking of 190 cities across Canada factoring in such things as house prices, average household income, number of years to pay for the average house and so on. There are also methods of calculating such things as population growth rates, climate, crime rates and culture among some of the factors measured. To view the complete list of rankings for all 190 Canadian cities visit the Money Sense website HERE.

There were three key indicators that would suggest Nanaimo is not doing as well as it should if it hopes to keep attracting new people. The average house price at $380,700 was ranked at 155 / 190, Household Income at $67,172 was ranked at 145 / 190 and the number of years required to pay for the average home with the average household income 179 / 190.

Studies, and methods and the resulting statistics are perhaps not all that useful, but we always seem to be willing to embrace them when they show us in a favourable light, and dismiss them when they indicate something less desirable.
