Demand Councillors 'Revote or Resign'
It seems the call by Campbell River Mayor for the taxpayers of his city to revolt against a whopping 13.5% tax increase is getting some traction this week. According to this article in the Campbell River Mirror more than 60 taxpayers marched on city hall to a council meeting to condemn council for voting in favour of the 13.6% tax increase proposed by city staff.
One pensioner who protested the increase in taxes last year appeared before council again this time demanding, not asking, for the resignation of councillors who voted for the increase. He shouted "Taxpayers, do not accept this increase. Revolt! Do not accept this increase".
On his way back to his seat Robson got a rousing round of applause from the gallery where he was heard to comment "in the old days we used to be allowed to throw fruit."
While not all communities are faced with the same challenges as Campbell River, they could very well be the canary in the coal mine, and other municipalities would do well to pay attention. It is pure speculation what would happen in Nanaimo if residents were faced with a 14% tax increase in one year, perhaps they would continue to snooze, or perhaps they might follow Campbell River's lead.
Year in year out it appears, taxes rise in California and Illinois, plus they do not want tax rates to elevate any more compared to what they presently have, so these two states look like they are in a challenge over who can impose the silliest tax laws and regulations on the oddest goods. And that's how we get a candy tax! The only real reasonable solution to make up the income is usually to enforce a candy tax. Seriously several candy shall be susceptible to sales tax while some are presumed "nutritional."
