Community Surveys
Invite Input
to Strategic Plan
Following 8 community workshops
involving over 350 participants, the City is now inviting further comment from
the public on the corporate strategic plan through an on-line survey. The survey
will be distributed through the Strategic Planning Blog on April 17th, with
completion required by April 23rd.
The on-line survey offers an
opportunity to rate the overall concepts that have developed from the input so
far. Some common themes have emerged and, although these are preliminary
concepts, they indicate that the community is concerned with eleven main themes:
- Diversified economic growth with benefits for everyone
- Environmental protection and sustainability
- Financial planning and asset management
- Governance, communications, and consultation
- Nanaimo’s image/brand
- Recreation, arts and culture opportunities
- Social inclusion and supports
- Transportation challenges and alternatives
- Unique and friendly neighbourhoods
- Vital non-profit sector
- Waterfront and downtown as a destination
The Blog provides more detail on
this input which includes the results of the community leader interviews and the
workshops involving the general public, community organizations, seniors, teens,
and the business community.
The Strategic Plan’s goal is to
set a policy framework to link all existing City plans, and to establish
priorities for municipal investments over the next 3-5 years. Councillor Jim
Kipp, chair of the Steering Committee states, "We're starting to capture a
picture of what residents want us to prioritize for the future. We hope the
public participates in the survey to help us rate these ideas."
Mayor, Council and City staff are
participating in internal workshops to reflect on community input and add their
own insights and perspectives. Two additional community surveys will be
distributed in May and June and a Wrap Up Community Forum is planned for June 6.
Final presentation of the Strategic Plan is scheduled to come before Council on
July 9.
To participate in the first
survey, members of the community must sign up on the Strategic Planning Blog, or
send an e-mail to yourvoiceournanaimo@nanaimo.ca by April 16th. The Blog can be
accessed through the city’s website .
