Nanaimo Empire Days Celebrations 2012

145th Empire Days Celebrations....longest consecutive Empire Days festivities in the entire British Commonwealth. This Empire Days long weekend will be extra special for Nanaimoites and their Shrine friends.The Shriners are in town to celebrate their Pacific Northwest Shrine Association Gathering and will be noticed everywhere attending their own special functions as well as their gigantic presence in Sundays 1 pm Downtown Empire Days Parade which follows the.traditional parade route .


The always fabulous Sunday parade organized by the Nanaimo Lions Club should be a humdinger this year with addition of many, many Shrine entries and a return by the Naden Band of Maritime Forces Pacific.Theme for this years parade is " Shriners:100 Years In Nanaimo". The Imperial Potentate Michael Severe will be the parade marshall...don't forget to stop off for a hot dog at the annual pre-parade Hot Dog Sale at St. Pauls Anglican Church on Chapel Street starting Sunday noon


Kicking off the events for the Nanaimo Empire Days Celebration Society weekend festivities on FRIDAY MAY 18 at 7pm will be the crowning of the 2012 May Queen and her Royal Party.The crowning will take place at Quarterway Elementary School,corner Bowen and Wellington Roads, and thanks to the great cooperation of Quarterway, will mark the first time this event has taken place at the school where the Royal Party was chosen.Each year,kids from a different School District 68 elementary school are chosen for this honour. This years queen is Rosemary Saddlemyer, her princesses are Amma Bouteng and Taryn Pistor and page boys are Jonah Gillespie and Jonas Green.Doors open at 6:30 and the entire community is invited to this free event. Crowning ceremony, entertainment and refreshments.


SATURDAY MAY 19th will be a day when the May Queen and her Royal Party make a few rounds downtown. They will be firing the noon cannon at Bastion Square and at 2pm will make an appearance at the Downtown Museum located in the Conference Centre......the public is invited to an Open House aboard the HMCS Nanaimo moored at the Visiting Vessel pier downtown between 1 and 3 pm Saturday. A total of 3 Royal Canadian Navy ships will be in Nanaimo Harbour over this long weekend.
