The Nanaimo and Ladysmith Crime Stoppers program was recently recognized with four Provincial awards for their efforts in supporting Crime Stoppers. The awards are as follows:

  • 2011 Print award- The Nanaimo Bulletin for Crimes of the Week
  • 2011 Radio award- Island Radio (The Wolf and the Wave) for Unsolved Crimes and public service announcements
  • 2011 Televison award- Shaw TV for 'Crime Stoppers Re-enactments'
  • 2011 Police Co-ordinator of the Year- Constable Gary O’Brien
We are extremely pleased to have our local program recognized and Cst. O’Brien’s hard work and efforts acknowledged. Crime Stoppers is one of the most proven and effective crime fighting tools we have. Without the support of our media partners, we would not have achieved this success, said Superintendent Norm McPhail, Officer in Charge of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization that receives no government funding and relies solely on donations and fund-raising initiatives to finance the individual programs throughout British Columbia. The Nanaimo and Ladysmith program receives over 300 tips each year. Since their inception in 1990, they have taken almost $9 million dollars of illegal drugs off local streets and recovered over $1 million dollars of stolen goods.
