Electric Vehicle Sales In Canada

Only 468 Electric Vehicles Sold In 2011 In Canada

Despite all the hype and government subsidies electric vehicle sales are not coming anywhere close to expectations. For the year 2011 in the Canadian new vehicle market of 1,585,519 in sales the EV share came to 468 units. Of those sales only 45 were done at dealers so the assumption is that the balance were purchased by different levels of government.

Nanaimo City has done it's bit in supporting the electric car business adding several electric vehicles and installing many thousands of dollars or recharging stations at two locations. One reason City Hall leads the charge in electric vehicle sales is due to the fact, they aren't spending their own money.

One of the reasons identified for the abysmal sale of electric cars, is cost, plain and simple. When you don't have the luxury of simply sticking your hand deeper into the taxpayers pocket to pay for your every whim, you have to watch how you spend your money.
