Get Mechanical Advice From a Mechanic

Tire Installers Not Qualified Mechanics

I am in no way demeaning the occupation of tire installation technician, they perform a very important job when it comes to keeping your car safe as it hurdles down the highway at 90+kmh with hundreds of other people doing the same thing.

However, they are not qualified to provide sound advice on the overall state of your vehicle as I recently experienced at a tire shop which shall remain nameless. I am not naming a specific shop as I believe there is nothing unique about the way they conduct their business which does raise some ethical issues, but then again business ethics seem to be rarer and rarer these days.

During the installation of my new tires they performed a multi-point inspection of the car from fluid levels, brake pads etc. When I came to pay the bill for the new tires the tech went through the inspection findings with the purpose of encouraging me to bring the car in for further work.

One of the items which had been identified as needing immediate attention were the shocks and springs. The person who had inspected the car indicated that the shocks were the original equipment and should be replaced.

When I informed them that the shocks were less than six months old, he immediately stopped trying to 'sell' me anymore repair work. I have to wonder how many people wind up buying unneeded work which has been identified by unqualified people.

Even more disturbing is the possibility that an unqualified person may overlook a serious safety issue that should have been taken care of.
