Invasive Plant Managment In Nanaimo

Invasive Plant Management Strategy Survey Online

The Aliens have landed and they are among us.

Invasive alien plants are found in our parks and backyards, affecting the quality of our local environment, and some causing personal injury and damage to property.

The better-established invasive plants were brought by early settlers as reminders of home (think Scotch Broom) or to help feed livestock. Today, invasive plants continue to be introduced into British Columbia, often accidentally by ship or truck in the products we purchase from around the world. Some are even found for sale in our local Nurseries.

Because these plants are not native to this area, they thrive due to the lack of natural predators and can easily over take many of our local parks and natural spaces - reducing our local biodiversity over time.

As part of the City’s review of its current management practice in dealing with invasive plants, we are asking for the public’s help in filling out a short online survey to provide more insight into how invasive plants are impacting our city. A link to the online survey (which will be available online until October 3rd, 2012) can be found on the City’s website at www.nanaimo.ca/goto/invasives.

The results of this survey will be used in completing the City’s Invasive Plant Management Strategy, which will be used to guide City staff and the public on how best to manage invasive plants in future.
