Students Get A Taste Of The Trades

Heavy Metal Rocks Program

High school students get a hands-on experience operating a variety of heavy equipment giving them in idea of what different trades have to offer as a career choice.

There is a large shortage of trained trades people coming in the not too distant future as many old hands retire. As reported earlier the BC Construction Association is currently trying to fill 500 vacant jobs by recruiting in Ireland. Similar shortages exist in the trades in booming Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Back when I was a lad (just a few years after the Ark) my high school offered 'shops' training in Automotive, Machine Shop, Carpentry, Electrical and Drafting. Of course Computer training was not even heard of back then but all the shops gave us the opportunity to get a taste of what a career might be like in a variety of fields. I don't know if all secondary schools in the province offer such choices now but apparently we are not keeping up with the demands coming in many of the fields known as 'the trades'.
