Checked Under Your Mattress Lately?

Nearly 1,000,000 $1000.00 Bills Still In Circulation

On the recommendation of the RCMP ten years ago the mint stopped issuing $1,000 bank notes which were very popular with the criminal element when it came to transacting large drug deals.

Apparently $1,000,000.00 in $100.00 bills requires 10,000 bills and weighs about 10 kilograms whereas the same amount in $1,000 bills requires a mere 1,000 bills and weighs only 1 kilo. This makes them the currency of choice for high-level drug dealers which is the prime reason nearly 1,000,000 of these bills are still in circulation 10 years after the last issue. They just keep going around and around in the drug circles since that requires no accounting, whereas if they end up in a bank someone has to account for them.

They could be wrong however with the supposition that these notes are in the hands of high level crooks and may very well be tucked away under mattresses all across this great land, when was the last time you checked under yours?

Over 30 years ago the $1,000 bills were very close to the same colour as the Canadian $2 bank note. A friend of mine who owned a shop was suprised one day when doing up his bank deposit to come across one in his til since nothing in his shop sold for anything near $1,000. It turns out that a customer and a clerk has mistaken the $1,000 bill for a $2.00 bill and neither had noticed the denomination. I believe the customer never did come back looking for their money so it turned out to be the most profitable day on record for that shop.
