Moving Day At City Hall Annex

Moving Company Relocating Staff In New Annex

Moving vans were parked in front of the old city annex building and are now in the process of moving furniture and related office trappings over to the brand new shiny office which is nearly complete.

Staff hope to be in their new digs and fully up and operational in early January.

The decision to vacate the old annex rather than bring it up to current seismic standards was a decision made in March of 2010 in an in-camera council meeting, the minutes of which are still shrouded in the secrecy of the in-camera process.

From the minutes I have been able to obtain through a Freedom of Information request I have been able to determine that the first vote by council to build the new annex was defeated by the council of the day. To this day, council refuses to reveal which councilors in fact voted for this $16 million expense.

Adding to the controversy is the fact a $12 million building contract was awarded by city staff without going to public tender.

  1. This moving contract was awarded to Nanaimo Minute Men after a bidding process. Nanaimo Minute Men are the only moving company in Nanaimo capable of handling the logistics of a move as large and complex as this one. A dedicated team and special equipment was required due to time constraints.
