Councilor George Anderson

Passes Third Reading of Budget Bylaw
Comfortable It Can Be Changed Later

At the council meeting of Jan. 28, 2013 the youngest member of Nanaimo City Council expressed his concern that some other members of council were taking issue with being asked to give third reading to the 2013 budget bylaw.

Apparently, the fact that council had not considered or debated any aspects of the document which over the next five years will have spent over $850,000,000.00 was of no reason of concern for Councilor Anderson.

He pointed out that for the past thirty years councils have always given third reading to what used to be called a conditional budget saying they have until final adoption in May to make changes. That of course is not true of the budget given third reading at this council meeting which will actually be adopted at the Feb. 18th council meeting, which demonstrates Anderson's lack of understanding of what he was voting for.

His views apparently were shared by the majority of council as third reading was given to this most important bylaw.

  1. I admit, I was excited to have George Anderson on council at first. At this point, given his position many items, I am perplexed. His lack of experience alongside his arrogance is disappointing to say the least and really limits the relationship between council and concerns expressed by his constituents. I will not vote for him again.

Appears that last year, the 2012 – 2016 Financial Plan was dealt with as follows:

At regular council mtg. of February 13, 2012, Financial Plan Bylaw 2012 No. 7144 passed the first three readings. -***Thereafter, at least four changes were made to the Financial Plan, one of which was the addition of the position of Communications Manager.***

At regular council mtg. of February 27, 2012, third reading was rescinded and the third reading of the Bylaw was passed as amended.

At regular council mtg. of March 12, 2012, (at which I spoke to the Financial Plan), I understand that the Bylaw was adopted by a majority of council.

Furthermore ..... at regular council mtg. of April 30, 2012, the first three readings of FINANCIAL PLAN AMENDMENT BYLAW 2012 NO. 7144.01 passed by a majority of council.

At regular council mtg. of May 14, 2012, FINANCIAL PLAN AMENDMENT BYLAW 2012 NO. 7144.01 was ADOPTED by a majority of council.

Mr. Anderson promised to lower the age of city council, I can't remember him promising to do anything else. So perhaps at least he kept his election promise.
I was always a little surprised that citizens think so little of the position of city councilor that someone with such little experience would actually get elected. Not unlike Mr. Beech sometime ago.

Apparently, in the political world, Anderson is a very active Federal Liberal. Not as "inexperienced" as you may think!

  5. I have always suspected Goerge Anderson was voted into council mainly due to support from his community of Harewood. Very disappointing how he has represented himself with the Colliery Dam issue. He refuses to listen how important keeping the dams and lakes are to the voters who love and use the park. I have heard said many times recently that come election time, he will not enjoy the same support from his community. I did vote for him the first time with enthusiasm, I certainly will not vote for him again if he votes against keeping the dams and lakes on May 13th.
