Media War Shaping Up?

Is Glacier Taking Aim At The Bulletin?

This weeks announcement that the Harbour City Star is being reinvented probably does not bode well for the owners of the Nanaimo News Bulletin. The Bulletin has always been able to compete with the Daily News for the coveted revenue which flows from the delivery of the weekly sales flyers.

Sales flyers are the gravy that has become the lifeblood of the print media in many markets as lagging revenue from circulation and declining readership and falling advertising revenue makes the traditional newspaper business model, just not what it used to be.

Arguably the only reason the Star has been kept around is because of it's claim to deliver a copy to all Nanaimo households which clearly does not happen using the paid Daily News. The Star used to be top dog in the weekly free shopper department but over the years has been displaced by the more popular News Bulletin which over the years has increased from once weekly, to the cuurent three times weekly.

Likely the reinvention of the Star is as much about attracting flyer revenue away from the Bulletin as it is to better service Nanaimo. It is hard to imagine what the Star will offer, that the Daily does not already provide. It would almost appear as if they are competing with themselves, after all if the Star is the new improved print media in town, why pay for the Daily?
