Quote Worth Repeating

The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a democracy you vote first and take orders later: in a dictatorship you don't have to waste your time voting.

  1. How fortunate Charles Bukowski is to have been oblivious to the ramifiscations of a dictatorship. could it be that he is simply expressing his impateince over the inconvenience of having to vote for a change in his standard of life, fortunately for him, i am in a very patient mood today, and do not normally bully, beat, or maime, the weak, or the infirm, or the handicapped, or the mentally challenged unless they say something stupid to try my patience.

  2. I don't think that a dictatorship has to be a brutal one. In our democracy once elected, officials can and do, do pretty much as they please. In that sense, they are dictators.
I am old enough to remember Prime Minister Trudeau defeating Robert Stanfield who was saying that wage and price controls were needed. A few months after winning the election which included ridiculing Stanfield, PET brought in wage and price controls.

  3. i agree with you, i wasn't happy with Trudeau either, but, it didn't take a civil war or a coup to get rid of him, and i don't think we have to go that far back or that far afield to find examples of what you speak. As i recall, trudeau also invoked marshal law, during the flq thing, which i supported. personally, i can't think of one instance of a dictatorship that ended without civil strife of some degree, except Japan, when the emperor stepped down as a result of ww 2.

  4. a little foot note, i think that you and i can happily agree that the remmenence of that kind of goverance and tyranny are quickly dissappearing, even in the arab world, hopefully the next thing will be religious dogma and radicalism.
