RCMP Save Suicidal Woman

Being Considered For Live Saving Award

Two Nanaimo officers are being credited with saving the life of a distraught suicidal female who attempted to end her life by hanging. The 53 year old is now recovering at home and receiving the treatment she needs to move on.

For Constable’s Keihin HERAULT and Nick FLEMING, it was a call both had attended to many times over. Cst HERAULT commented I figured we would show up, talk to her for a bit and convince her to check herself into the hospital. Was I ever in for a shock.

Enroute to the call dispatch provided updated information that the female was now in her backyard with a step ladder and electrical cord in hand. Both police officers hearts skipped a collective beat. Cst HERAULT arrived first and found the gate surrounding the backyard locked.

With a decisive size 12 boot, he knocked the fence over and now, with an unobstructed view of the yard he could see the female. Knowing time was of the essence, he raced towards her and with seconds to spare, prevented her from doing harm to herself. Cst Flemming then arrived and together they secured her until Paramedics arrived.

BC Paramedics were on scene within minutes and transported her to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for observation and treatment. She was kept over night and did not sustain any serious injuries . It was great to be able to make a difference tonight. We got lucky, said HERAULT.

The officers actions are being reviewed and both are being considered for an appropriate life saving award, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
