A Reader Remembers Nanaimo --- the good!

An anonymous reader sends along the following remembering a time when there was nothing but trees all along Hammond Bay Road all the way to Lantzville. I don't go back quite that far but do remember when Piper's Pub, was indeed way out in the toolies.

From a long time Nanaimo resident, who shall remain nameless:

My favorite thing about Nanaimo, is my memories of growing up here. You mention Neck point, as a child, I, with my family used to camp there. There used to be a cabin tucked in the right corner, tucked in between the bluff and the water, at low tide there were tidal pools in the rocks that were great to explore.

In those days, there was no road, just a trail, through the bush to the beach from Hammond bay road, which was a one lane gravel road at the time, all the way from Departure bay, to the old highway, just short of Lantzville, no houses, just bush, all the way.

Unlike to-day, there wasn't much for views, unless you were on the beach. Look at it now, who could have imagined? I suppose growing up in Nanaimo, made me a bit of a solitary person, but at the same time there was a connection with everybody, I knew everybody I saw, and they knew me. To-day, it's hard to find that. There are still beautiful views and vistas, that hasn't changed, but everything else has.

There was a time when you could take a nice quiet, relaxing ride, to-day, there is no such thing. There was privacy, you only saw people if you went looking for them.

My favorite place in those day and still is today, are the dams, it may not have the solitude it once had, but some of it still remains, as does the beauty, that unassuming, not in your face kind of beauty that gives you peace, and takes away your burdens.

Soon even this place is going to be changed, leaving me with nothing about Nanaimo to recommend.
