Colliery Dam Survey

Survey Shows 92% Support For Keeping The Dams

A recent survey conducted by the Colliery Dam Preservation Society of 90 homes most likely to be affected by a flood shows overwhelming support of keeping the dams in Colliery Dam Park.

The questions asked revealed 79% were aware the City was considering rehabilitating or building as an alternative to dam removal while 21% were unaware. Asked if they were aware, prior to Nov. 2012 that they lived in a floodplain 48% said yes and 52% said no. When asked about upgrading the dams or removing them 3.3% said they favoured removal, 92% said upgrade them and 4% had no opinion.

The survey was of 90 homes with an average of 2.5 residents per dwelling with an average occupancy time of 12 years at their current address. There were 57 single family residences, 14 townhomes and 19 apartments in the survey. All were living directly in the immediate floodplain below Colliery Dams.

A few sample comments represent a common opinion of the value of the lakes and park created by the dams:

“ The dam should stay, lower water level to bring dam to a more safe standard”

“ Please save the dam. Been here longer than me"

“Only quiet space in Harewood. Generations have used them”

“I played and hiked and fished there since 1977”

“This is a treasure. Makes me sick to my stomach that they want them removed”
