Council To Receive Fire Rescue Response Report

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Response Performance Report
and Integrated Risk Management Model

Mayor and Council will be receiving an information report from Nanaimo Fire Rescue at the April 8th Council Meeting. This report will provide Council with detailed analysis and information on service demands and response performance within the community as well as a new Integrated Risk Management Model Proposal. Nanaimo, like many communities nationwide, is seeking to find innovative ways to provide sustainable services into the future. This report presents a model that sets a foundation for the City of Nanaimo to look at a cost effective and sustainable alternative.

At the request of Mayor and Council last October, the report is an analysis of historical response statistics and a review of current department performance to look for ways to continually provide efficient service to the Citizens of Nanaimo. The model provides a framework to assess and manage risk through reduction strategies and enhance response times throughout the community. This will result in progressive life safety strategies, sustainability and fiscal responsibility.

Additional key components are a shift from the traditional fire service suppression model to increased focus on prevention, public education and community safety through an integrated risk management approach. In addition, the model recommends integration with Emergency Management and an all hazards approach to meet community safety expectations. Mayor and Council will be reviewing the report and will advise staff on next steps based on this information. To read the report residents can visit www.nanaimo.ca.

This is the first step in the public process and staff’s recommendation is to commence public consultation with interested parties.
